Do you consider the importance of your air conditioners filter?

Most do not think about their filter and why they should.  They assume their air quality is ok and thus neglect the regular replacement as recommended.  Contrary to what you might think, the air filter in your air conditioning system is not there to boost indoor air quality throughout your home.  If you have not changed it recently, there is a good possibility that dirty filter is already causing problems for your system. Eventually, a very dirty filter can and will result in the need for AC repair.

Why You Need to Change Your Filter Regularly?

The purpose of the air filter, as designed, is to keep pollutants from building up on sensitive components within the air conditioner.  Dust and dirt caking your evaporator coil is not a good thing.  Extremely dirty filters increase the possibility of dirt or dust bypassing the filter and contaminating the system.  When that happens, you’re looking at an influx of pollutants into the system. Airflow will eventually choose the path of least resistance if faced with a clogged filter.

When to Change Your Filter

Air filters should be changed every 1-3 months.  Many factors determine the exact time within the range your home falls.  The two main influencers are the cleanliness of your home and the presence of any pets. Checking your filter regularly will allow you get an understanding for how often and quickly it needs to be replaced.

What Happens to an AC with a Dirty Filter?

Your system already works hard due to extreme temperatures.  A dirty filter increases the workload even more.  The increase workload increases its energy usage, thus increasing your utility bill.  The undue strain places a lot of wear and tear on the system.  Eventually, airflow can decrease to the point where condensation collected on the coil begins freeze creating an insulating barrier of ice impeding the crucial heat transfer process.  More strain. Short cycling can occur, driving up energy costs further while also increasing the risk of damage to your system.

Filters are cheaper than repairs and installations is extremely easy.
